How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle
Choosing a paddle shouldn't feel like reading an engineering spec sheet. Here's what each factor actually does, backed by how paddles are built and tested across the sport, not sales copy.
Paddle Weight
| Weight Range | Category | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 7.5 oz | Lightweight | Easier to swing quickly, better manoeuvrability, less arm fatigue |
| 7.5 – 8.5 oz | Mid-weight | Balance of power and control, the range most beginners are advised toward |
| 8.5 oz+ | Heavyweight | More natural power behind each shot, less manoeuvrable |
Grip Size
Measure from the bottom crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger; that's your ideal grip circumference. Most adult players land between 4" and 4.375".
Too small and you'll over-grip, tiring your forearm faster. Too large and you lose feel and wrist snap. If unsure, size down; an overgrip can build up a small grip, but an oversized grip can't be made smaller.
Core Thickness
| Thickness | Feel | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 16mm+ | Softer, more forgiving, larger effective sweet spot | Players still building consistent contact |
| 14mm | A genuine middle ground between control and power | Players developing spin and shot placement |
| 13mm or less | Crisper, more responsive, less forgiving | Players with consistent contact who want maximum pop |
Face Material
| Material | Characteristics | Typical Price Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Fiberglass / Composite | Forgiving, good spin, larger sweet spot | Entry-level |
| Carbon Fibre (standard grade) | Balanced control and power, real carbon performance | Mid-range |
| Carbon Fibre (premium grade, e.g. T700) | ~40% stronger than standard carbon, crisper response, better long-term durability | Premium |
Paddle Shape
| Shape | Sweet Spot | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Standard / Widebody (7–8" wide) | Largest, most forgiving | Most players, especially beginners |
| Elongated | Smaller, positioned higher | Players prioritising reach and paddle head speed |
Find Your Player Type
| You Are... | Look For |
|---|---|
| Brand new to the sport | Mid-weight, standard/widebody shape, 16mm core, fiberglass or entry carbon face |
| A few months in, building your game | Mid-weight, standard-to-hybrid shape, 14mm core, carbon face |
| Competing or playing several times a week | Your choice of weight, elongated shape, 13mm core, premium carbon face |
The Legal Basics
Every paddle must have a combined length + width no greater than 24 inches, with length alone capped at 17 inches. There's no restriction on thickness or weight.
This standard is set by USA Pickleball and referenced by Pickleball England for UK play, so any paddle sold as tournament-legal should meet it.
The fastest way to narrow it down is by level, not brand name.
